CARE VAN® PROGRAM – DRIVING HEALTH TO OUR COMMUNITIES

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL) is happy to serve the community for over 30 years through the Care Van Program.

Our Care Vans have driven the state to help build healthy communities by providing basic health services, educational outreach, and health literacy and education. These services include:

  • No cost immunizations
  • Dental services
  • Health literacy education
  • HIV testing
  • COVID-19 testing

Our Care Vans visit schools, churches, public housing, and many more locations across the state.

Our Partners

With each of our partnerships we strive to make sure that we highlight the importance of immunizations, with a focus on yearly flu shots.

The Care Van Program has partnered with the Chicago Department of Public Health Learn more about third-party links for over 30 years. The goal has been to provide childhood vaccinations to students entering Chicago Public Schools, to meet State of Illinois requirements.

We worked with the Chicago Department of Public Health to identify high need sites to provide COVID-19 immunizations and education to frontline and essential workers. Our partnership with the Lake County Public Health Department offers resources to 18 townships, vaccinating community members in 1A and 1B categories.

The Care Van and local Public Health Departments are coordinating with Albertsons pharmacy to improve access, by vaccinating communities in rural areas across central and southern Illinois counties.

The Care Van Program also has an ongoing partnership with Edgar County Department of Public Health to provide basic dental screenings and services to school-aged children in the county.

Our Year in Review

In 2020, BCBSIL’s Care Van Program administered more than 10,000 immunizations and over 13,000 other services across Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, Chicago, Edgar County, Madison County, Peoria, and East St. Louis.

The Care Van team also launched a new grant initiative working with over a dozen community partners including Federally Qualified Health Centers and Public Health Departments across the state of Illinois.

Additionally, the Care Van team developed new strategies to support communities across the state of Illinois through community engagement addressing the social determinants of health during COVID-19.
